DECADES MUSIC HISTORY:
Rock and roll dominated popular music in the 50s. Doo wop was built upon vocal harmonies, and pop music, which replaced swing music, dominated the first half of the decade. Blues had a presence in mainstream music, and the end of the decade saw the rise of rhythm and blues.

The psychedelic rock of the 60s was an LSD-inspired phenomenon. After this, the American blues-rock took off in the mid-60s as performers began to emulate the sounds of British blues musicians. These country- and folk-rock-style sounds influenced the rhythms and beats of the latter-half of the decade like soul music.

The 70s saw the rise of disco, which became one of the biggest genres of the decade. Funk was second, and aside from funk, smooth jazz and jazz-fusion remained popular throughout the years. Punk rock thrived through the late 70s and genres like reggae and hip-hop made their presence known.

In the 80s, glam metal and thrash metal were characterized by heavy distortion and whammy bar use. The previous decade was significantly impacted by the sounds of disco, but as disco music’s presence began to dissipate, genres such as post-disco, italo disco, euro disco, and dance pop began to flourish.

Rock music was still popular in the 90s, with genres like Britpop, industrial rock, and alternative rock took precedence over the grunge scene of the 80s. Genres of electric music maintained popularity, and subgenres such as house, techno, trance, happy hardcore, drum and bass & trip hop.
